This banner highlights the legacy that the Economic and Social Council has played on a global scale. By eradicating diseases and helping the poor, the ECOSOC has strongly reformed the social conditions for everyone. UNICEF and other agencies in the ECOSOC provide huminatarian relief to victims of disasters as well as guarantee human rights for all.

Established by the UN charter in 1946, the ECOSOC is the principle body for economic, social and environmental issues.

ECOSOC membership is based on geographic representation. Members are elected for three-year terms by the General Assembly. Four of the five permanent members of the Security Council have been continuously re-elected because they provide funding for most of ECOSOC’s budget.

The World Health Organization is a specialized agency that provides leadership on global health matters. It founded the Smallpox Eradication Program in 1960 and successfully obliterated the disease from the Earth by 1980.
